Look good, taste great

I love good beer. In fact, I love great beer. But for me it's not just about the taste (although that does help somewhat), it's also about the whole experience - the care taken with the brew, a bit of back/history, where and how it's served and - no surprises here - what it looks like.

The influence food and drink branding has on our taste experience in no secret - numerous studies have examined the physiological relationship between packaging design and our overall enjoyment of a product, and it turns out that in a lot of cases products perceived to have 'better' design taste better. Seems pretty obvious really when put like that.

Whilst my beer selection isn't necessarily steered by well-designed packaging, on occasion it certainly helps draw my eye, and never more so than with Omnipollo beers. Their conception, branding and bottle designs are a collaboration between Scandinavian artist Karl Grandin and brewer Henok Fentie and draw the eye they do - beautiful minimalist designs that really challenge the beer label status quo adorn their creations and set you up for something a little bit special.

Now I won't go into my detailed tasting notes on their Noa Pecan Mud Imperial Stout that 'caught my eye' over the weekend, but suffice to say it was excellent and made all the better by the backstory, consideration and attention to detail in design (colour-coded bottle caps? Lovely). Oh, and the beautiful tasting glass I poured it in - but that's another post altogether...

Omnipollo, I'm a fan.
